How long does a braces treatment last?

brackets dentales cual es su duracion

The treatment of braces (orthodontics) is very common in dentistry. It is the most effective solution for correcting teeth. In the past, it was common for orthodontic treatment to last four to five years. However, technology has advanced and with it, the duration of this treatment.

Such is the progress that today we are talking about treatments lasting approximately 18 months. Although clearly everything will depend on the severity of the case and the immediate needs of the patient.

Because of this, at SOFDental we believe that prior planning and commitment are essential. Oral hygiene and regular dental appointments are a fundamental part of this commitment.

Objectives of bracket treatment

The main objective of braces treatment is to correct the patient’s teeth, making them much healthier, esthetic and functional. Treatment usually lasts between one and three years. Although slight malpositions can be corrected in just a matter of months.

Therefore, the length of time will depend on the problem. These include the patient’s anatomy, the condition of the teeth, hereditary factors and the patient‘s cooperation.

To ensure the success of the treatment, considering the estimated treatment time, X-rays and study models are mandatory. In order to offer an accurate diagnosis, as well as intelligent solutions adapted to the patient’s needs.

Before starting braces treatment

For a correct diagnosis and proper treatment planning, photographs and radiographs for study models are mandatory. This allows you to objectively and visually communicate the diagnosis, as well as the options available for your case.

However, it is important to know that despite testing and treatment time planning, the latter may vary depending on the patient’s response to treatment.

Duration for each orthodontic case

Currently, a simple orthodontic treatment can last between 12 and 18 months approximately. However, more complex cases have a duration of 30 months or more depending on the particularity of the case.

Therefore, there are different factors that can influence the duration of bracket treatment:

  • Age of the patient: Age determines the duration of orthodontic treatment. In children, due to the growth period, it has a shorter duration than in adults. This is mainly due to the fact that their jaws, being young, are easier to mold.
  • Type of orthodontics: The type of orthodontics is a determining factor in the length of time it lasts. Not all of them perform the same function in the same way. At this point, we can list several orthodontics.
  1. Traditional: Metal brackets to correct bite and alignment problems quickly and effectively. Ideal for adolescents and uncommon in adults.
  2. Esthetic or sapphire orthodontics: Translucent brackets whose material adapts to the dental piece without staining them. It offers the same results as metal brackets, although they are more expensive.
  3. Invisalign: transparent aligner splints, totally invisible and removable, i.e., the patient can remove them to eat or brush his or her teeth.
  4. Lingual: Esthetic orthodontics that is placed on the inner side of the teeth, ideal for adult patients.
  • Degree of the problem: The degree of malocclusion directly influences the duration of treatment. The usefulness of the brackets in terms of professional handling depends on this.
  • Patient collaboration: Collaboration is crucial in every way. Since oral hygiene care and changes in consumption habits determine the success of the treatment to a greater extent. Hence the importance of patient – dentist commitment.

At the end of the treatment it is possible to recommend the use of retainers placed on the inner side of the teeth. This is to prevent the teeth from returning to their initial position.

With this in mind, scheduled appointments with your trusted specialist are essential. In case you miss one, please contact us as soon as possible to replace it with another one in the shortest possible time.
